Dr. Hurt received his MD degree in 1982 from the University of Missouri-Columbia, where he completed a residency in pathology in 1987. After a dermatopathology fellowship in 1988, he obtained board certification in dermatopathology in 1990. He has practiced privately in the field of cutaneous pathology with Dr. Daniel J. Santa Cruz, in Saint Louis County, since 1991. He became an Instructor of Clinical Medicine in the Division of Dermatology at Washington University in 2001.
Dr. Hurt is a member of the editorial Board of the Journal of Cutaneous Pathology and is the Book Review Editor of the on-line journal Dermatopathology: Practical and Conceptual. He is also a faculty member of the on-line dermatopathology lecture series MD Live on the Internet.
Dr. Hurt is interested in all fields of cutaneous pathology, but he has a particular interest in adnexal neoplasms, melanocytic neoplasms, and in history applied to the philosophy of diagnosis. He likes to teach at the microscope, and assists with staged excisions for the treatment of melanoma.
