History: A 2 day-old white term male newborn presents with macrosomia, hypoglycemia, and an eruption on the face and extremities. At birth he had respiratory distress which has resolved. He is otherwise healthy and without fever.
Medications: ampicillin, gentamycin, and acyclovir
Physical Examination: T: 37.4 C, BP: 81/41, P: 136, RR: 56, Wt: 5.6 kg. There are shallow erosions on the face and hemmorhagic, reddish-brown papules on the extremities (figures 1 to 3).
Laboratory Data: CBC reveals a mild anemia, CMP is remarkable
for a elevated total bilirubin of 5.6. Chest x-ray is normal.
